Meteora: The origins of the unique geological structures in Meteora remain unknown. Numerous theories have been suggested, but none have gained validation. These impressive rocks have loomed majestically for millennia, serving as a stunning backdrop for the 24 monasteries built on them over six centuries ago. The initial inhabitants of Meteora were monks who sought isolation and deep spiritual reflection in the rock caves. Barnabas was the earliest documented hermit to reside in a cave in 985 AD. Over time, additional monks arrived, and in the mid-14th century, they erected a small church. In 1382, the monk Athanasios from Mount Athos founded the grand monastery of Magalo Meteora atop one of the towering peaks. Motivated by Athanasios, twenty-three more monasteries were constructed, each situated on the rocky cliffs. However, by the 19th century, many of these monasteries had deteriorated. It wasn't until the 1920s that steps were carved into the rocks, facilitating access to the remaining six monasteries for visitors. Recently, a resurgence of interest in religion in Meteora has led to a significant return of monks and nuns to the monastic community. Meteora fascinates visitors today with its stunning natural landscape and profound spiritual importance. Most of our Road Trips and Private Tours include this mesmerizing destination.

Thessaloniki transformed into a critical trading port along the Via Egnatia, which linked Dyrrhachium to Byzantium. This made commerce between Thessaloniki and major trade hubs such as Rome and Byzantium easier. Given its importance in the Aimos peninsula, it eventually became the capital of the Greek provinces of the Roman Empire. Thessaloniki emerged as an early center for Christianity during the Roman Empire in 50 A.D.
